25 miles south east of Puntarenas along the paved coastal highway to Quepos lies Carara National Park, has a surface of 4700 hectares or 11600 acres is mostly primary forest on the coastal shelf and in the low foothills – and was created in April 1978, Carara is located in a transition zone between the Dry forest and the Rain forest in Costa Rica. This National Park is one of the beneficiaries of Costa Rica ‘s position between North and South America an abundance of wildlife flows into this transition zone.

Before reaching the National Park, we are going to make a stop at the Tarcoles Bridge to study the edges of the river for any movement, what it looks to be a sandbar may well be a huge crocodile enjoying the sun.

Then at the National Park we are going to take one of the trails. And start to walk, if the canopy begins to shudder and shake, we have probably been overtaken by a group of white faced monkeys, who normally swing through the dates trees, gobbling fruits and shaking the trees as they go. Scarlet Macaws and Mealy Parrots screeched overhead in trees too.

Things fall, and terrestrials animals follow along the ground, foraging. Wait quietly, and you might spot and agoutis, armadillo, peccary crossing the trail, keep and eye on the trail and we will see leaf-cuter ants carrying their harvest.

Scaly-breasted Humming birds are very common and their habit of sitting for long periods of time than other hummers makes them fairly easy to observe. Antbirds are specially abundant and tame in the undergrowth beside the trail.

Beautiful heliconias, hanging in clusters that appear like blood-drenched spearheads and many other things you’re guide will show you as you keep going.

We will have the opportunity to walk at this beautiful National Park Carara for at least 2 1/2 , and then we will transfer you to the beach town ¨Jaco beach¨, 25 minutes from the Park to the Hotel Copacabana, beach from property, were you will have a Costa Rica typical meal, after lunch there will be 2 hours for relax and to enjoy the beach.

Then back to the pier.

Poas has blasted out three craters in its lifetime, and due to the more or less constant volcanic activity, the appearance of the main crater changes regularly, filled with milky gray water from which sulphurous gases waft and broil. Poas is also home to a rare version of cloud forest called dwarf. Also Poas squirrel is unique to this region.

Sarhi ox-cart was first produce by local families for the immigrant settlers who arrived at the beginning of the twentieth century to run the coffee plantations. Shops here are filled to the doorways with woodcrafts, such as rocking chairs, desks, polished bowls and plates, but the most noticeable are the display of brilliantly painted oxcarts.
TROPICALGARDEN HORSEBACK RIDE:

Measuring 8,335 feet and lasting between 45 minutes and one tour, this is a great alternative for those who like unite ecology with adventure. During this trip, guides will offer an expert interpretation of everything observed during the journey. For example, they’ll point out the differences in forests according to the level of plant development, as well as general explanations about the flora and fauna that can be observed. It is important to mention that even children can participate in this tour as our horses are trained to offer the safety, peace of mind and comfort that our guests deserve.

TURU-BARI

Tropical Park (Turu-ba ri means “River of the Moon” in the Huetar dialect) is a theme park aimed at adventure and ecological tourism. It opened on April 15, 2003, and currently covers 583 acres of land, of which 247 acres consist of the tropical garden. Beautiful scenery surrounds it. The park is bordered by the Rio Grande del Tarcoles on the northeast, and the Turrubares Hills and Carara National Park to the southeast. The Gulf of Nicoya lies to the west, and you can actually see the ocean from the highest point in the park.

TURU-BARI’S

pristine setting is the perfect place for visitors to learn about Costa Rica’s natural history, discover our ancestor’s lifestyle, have a true adventure experience or just enjoy some remarkable scenery. You’ll have an entertaining, unforgettable day, and at the same time you’ll learn more about Costa Rica’s rich tropical biology and culture. The park’s entrance is located on the property’s highest point, and visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding transition forest. Access to the tropical garden is by an aerial tram, which began to operate on July 26th, 2003.

For more than 15 years, this property was used to raise dual-purpose cattle (mainly for meat) and for agriculture (mainly mangos, papaya, oranges, sugar cane and corn). In 1997, a decision was made to change this focus and instead develop a sustainable tourism project which would help preserve our planet and bring socioeconomic benefits to a low-income community.

The project began with a massive reforestation effort that included planting over 45,000 trees, generating flowers and fruits that attracted birds, pollinators and many other animals. It’s worth mentioning that during the reforestation process, the species of trees found here were not introduced into the forest. Rather, they were reincorporated into their natural habitat by selecting species that lived in the two patches of existing forest in the park. This, together with the various botanical collections and the huge amount of ornamental plants spread out throughout the grounds; give a grand total of more than 70,000 plants that today comprise TURU-BA RI Tropical Park.

Cedar Valley is a private reserve located in the water shed of Banano river with an area of 150 hectares dedicated to preserve the Tropical Rainforest.

The water shed of Banano River is very important for our province, because with the water shed of Bananito river supply drinking water to the port of Limon and some communities of the district of Matama. The port of Limon is the most important port city of Costa Rica and to maintain its development, the protection of its water sources is fundamental. Together Banano and Bananito rivers supply water for more than 70000 persons.

The high parts of these water sheds have forests under governmental protection which are: protected zone of Banano river, the water recharge zone of Bananito river and private reserves such as Cedar Valley Ranch. All of these have a big diversity of plants and animals among them these are some species in danger of of extinction, as well as endemic species which means that are autochthonic from the area and unique in the world.

Besides their function as water reservoirs for the province of Limon and their well known recognized ecological value, the forests of these watersheds help mitigate waterfloods in the low lands and have a big touristic potential for its natural beauty.

History:

We are a family that had the chance to purchase a piece of land of 150 hectares and the Banana river banks, the enchantment that caused the natural beauty of the river gave us the idea of transforming the property in a natural refugee for the conservation of two very particular species of frogs that live in the area and that give benefits to all the natural environment that is located there.

The two frog species are: the red frog Dendrovatos pumilios and the green frog Dendrovatos Auratus wich are both unique in the world, endemic from the area.

In our shelter it is possible to appreciate a big amount of birds like: Montezuma oropendula, blue -hooded parrot, Bobo Chizo , Colibri Pechiazu l, Tragon , Green king fisher, Curre negro , Mosquetero Coludo , Sargentos, Toucans and pavas. Monkeys like the mantled howler monkey and the white troated capuchin; insects like the ants (cutter leave ants), bullet ants enfilas spider and dragonfly . With luck the turist will be able to see animals like: armadillo, spotted cavy, raccoon, guatusa, squirrell, three and two toed sloth, zorro de balsa and white tail deer.

The tourist will also be able to get to know a variety of trees among the most common species are : Cedro macho, Gavilan , Ceiba, Javillo, Pilon and Indio Desnudo and some plant like: orquids, bromelias and other types of epifit plants.

Due to the beauty of this place, the Pinto family that came here 30 years ago, wish that many people can see the place and enjoy the unforgettable experience of entering and having a close encounter with the beauty of the rainforest, you will feel an incredible energy that when you enter in it and see with your own eyes the diversity of flora and fauna from the place.

That is where Cedar Valley Ranch was born as a place where all tourist that arrives or comes through the city of Port Limon should be able to transport himself to an unforgettable experience.

In the Cedar Valley Ranch we have created three ways of living the experience to see the natural shelter :

Horseback ridding tour.

Jitney Tour or Wagon Experience

Hiking tour through the forest.

Horseback Ridding Tour

It’s a very nice adventure where you can admire the natural scenary that surrounds the tour path. You will be able to ride your horse along a small river and river bank, rainforest trails going up the mountains and enjoy the scenary that our view point offers. Also you will be able to meet the hundreds of frogs that live in our shelter, that distinguishes for its numerous population that it has. Entering the forest riding a horse is an adventure you will never forget.

Recommendations : long pants, close shoes, rain jacket in case of rain.
